Safaricom Ltd, a leading mobile network operator in Kenya developed and launched with Vodafone Group in 2007, the world’s first commercially successful mobile banking service - M-Pesa. Safaricom’s strategy to formalize mobile money exchange using a branchless banking service model has become a huge success and envy of operators around the globe.
M-Pesa contributes about half Kenya’s GDP and has become a critical real-time money transfer service for Kenyans. In 2014, Safaricom upped its strategy to improve reliability of M-Pesa services. Huawei won the partnership through demonstrated best in class delivery capability and partnership orientation. Huawei worked with Safaricom, Vodafone Group and partners to design, build and deploy the second generation M-Pesa platform.
Through architecture design and build of the second generation M-Pesa, Huawei completed the transformation to a new generation mobile money platform to deliver on all the requirements of Safaricom and Vodafone Group.
With seamless migration from the first generation platform, Safaricom, subscribers and agents can now experience enhanced mobile money services due to the improved reliability, increased cross-financial integration and robustness to meet regulatory mandates.
